Because all in life is constantly changing,
to find balance and harmony we continually need to adapt.
Ayurveda is the art of adapting.
Ayurveda is the ancient healing and medical system of India.
Literally translated Ayu means life and Veda means knowledge or science, it is the science of life and the knowledge of living. It has been practiced as a healing system for more than 5000 years and provides us with a simple yet profound and precise knowledge that can be interwoven into all aspects of living.
Ayurveda is a philosophy based of the principles of Nature. Ayurveda believes we each have our own unique way to evolve, live and thrive in the world. What is good for one person might be not so great for another. Finding a state of balance within our unique constitution while around us there is constant change is what is experienced as health. An imbalance within due to faulty intake and outside fluctuations will manifest as dis-ease.
By understanding that each individual is unique these principles of Nature are applied according to the persons specific needs at that time, these needs will change as do the circumstances, time, season and state of health. There is no one remedy fits all, Ayurveda is a living and adaptable yet solid medical system.
Between Heaven and Earth, Ayurveda sees three main forces at work in the manifest world, Vata- Air, the principle of movement and change, Pitta- Fire, the principle of digestion and transformation, and Kapha- Water, the principle of holding and stability. These are called the Doshas. All three Doshas are present in all manifestation and each one affects us differently according to our own unique make-up. As each individual is unique and their make-up of Vata, Pitta and Kapha is also a unique ratio. That is why discovering our constitution according to Air, Fire and Water is vital to finding health.
In most of us one dominates more than the others, but dual and triple constitutions also exist. Ayurveda is an immense body of wisdom that embraces change by knowing and adapting according to these forces and principles at play. By changing diet and routine according to constitution, age, present state of vitality, place in the world and time of day or year Ayurveda can guide us through life and we can stay in a state of balance in relation to our environment. This constitutes a state of health.
Our environment is always there supporting and affecting us and we in turn always affect it, when we do this consciously the effects will naturally be more beneficial to all. What happens on the outside is also happening within us. That is something most of us do not realise and that is where dis-ease has it's entry into our being.
Our intake is not only the physical foods we eat, but all impressions and experiences are food. The things we see, smell, hear, feel and taste on many levels are food. Images, words, voices, emotions, relations and surroundings are our foods in the subtler sense. We eat through all our senses. So what we feed our senses is what our body, mind and soul become and build upon.
Our perception and understanding is affected by our senses. Our senses are affected by our intake or in other words our experience and our output is the expression thereof. The foods we digest, absorb and use as support and the gifts harvested from that intake, is the continual exchange that forms and transforms our perception, personality and presence in this world.
Through cleansing the body-mind-soul complex we create a digestive fire that digests and nourishes the entire body. Then we can finally access the health and happiness that is our true inheritance.
Once cleansed the foundation and building blocks of the entire body-mind-soul complex become strong, healthy and supportive to not only the body it sustains, but to all.
Health is more contagious then disease, we only have to replace bad habits with healthful ones. And knowing when, what, where and how to nourish and give back is the essence of Ayurveda.
Namaste!
